This work is part of a general study aiming at the modelling growth and dispersion of the larvae of Pinctada margaritifera in the lagoon of Ahe atoll (Tuamotu, French Polynesia). The general objective of this study is to set up a model coupling the growth and the dispersal of chlorophyll and particulate matter according to different spatial and temporal scales. Totally 1111 samples were taken in 12 stations from April 21st to May 28th, 2007. The speed and the direction of the wind bad a significant effect on the different parameters. The depth has not influence on the variations of the chlorophyll and the particulate matter that of their quality descriptors (proportion of cells lower than 2 µm, that of the phaeopigments and the organic matter). Des matières solides séchées sont minéralisées en bombe fermée par un mélange d'acide nitrique, d'acide chlorhydrique et d'acide fluorhydrique à environ 120 °C pendant 180 minutes. Cette attaque acide est totale et le minéralisat liquide obtenu est analysé pour sa teneur en métaux par absorption atomique avec ou sans flamme. C'est une méthode très sensible puisqu'elle permet de détecter dans des particules jusqu'à 0,35 % d'Al; 0,15 % de Fe, 0,1 mg/kg de Cd, 2 mg/kg de Co, 0,4 mg/kg de Cr, 2 mg/kg de Cu, 0,4 mg/kg de Mn, 2 mg/kg de Ni, 2 mg/kg de Pb, 0,1 mg/kg de Zn. Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations at various levels within the water column, together with salinity and temperature, were measured using water samples collected from six stations across the Straits of Dover. The sampling programme covered a 16-month period, undertaken during 23 cruises. On the basis of the spatial variability in the concentrations, the water bodies are divided by several boundaries, controlled by tidal and wind conditions. Measurements made using an in situ particle-sizer (PSA) were compared to those of an optical backscatter sensor (OBS) in a macrotidal estuary. Both estimate the total volume of particles. After comparison with dry weight of suspended matter sampled in the study area, the different measurements were converted into dry weight. In three different kinetic energy regimes, times series were coherent for most of the observations.
